Look at that: I've managed to finish posting my pics from last year's trip to Kauai a whole three days before we touch down on the island for this year's vacation. Between being very busy at work, trying to get as much done as I can before I leave, lack of sleep, and the usual pre-travel anxiety, my brain is pretty much in shutdown mode as I sit here trying to string words together. So I'll move right on to the photos.

You'd think that by the end of my vacation I'd have been taking fewer pictures, not more. I may ask my folks to put a shock collar on me this year... At any rate, it was a busy day that resulted in a ton of photos, so once again I'll get right to it.

I've got a fairly large bunch of photos for today's post, taken either around Mom and Dad's place or in the town of Hanalei, so I'll just get right to it.

My last post about day 12 features a few Cattle Egrets I was able to photograph over the course of the day. I'd seen them walking along the top of the long, dense hedges next to our building a few times during our stay already, but so far hadn't managed to get any really nice close-ups of one. Obviously, by the time the sun set on day 12 that was no longer the case.
Starting off with this shot because I like the contrast of the bird against the greenery:

Okay. Truckload of pictures in yesterday's post, and there'll be another truckload in tomorrow's. So tonight, a smaller post. Which is actually pretty appropriate, as this is the smallest of the three birds these day 12 posts will be featuring. Adult Java Sparrows remind me a lot of Puffins, something you can decide for yourself either by clicking the link or waiting for me to get a couple of days further along. However, the group I came upon on this particular day were all juveniles. Which didn't really matter to me, as they were a lot of fun to watch. Hard to photograph, given how much they hopped around, but fun to watch.

Day 12 was a banner photo day. I took tons of pictures without ever leaving the resort, enough that I'll be spreading the posting of said photos out over a few days here. Today, I decided to start with the photos I took of some Northern Cardinals that spent some time in a palm tree right across from our porch; we were on the second floor, which means I got to take the pics of them pretty much at eye level. To start things off, one of the few shots I got of the male and female together on the palm branch:

Day 11 was Super Bowl Sunday, so we spent a good part of the day at our friend Don's house, hanging out with some friends to watch the ads. Oh, and the game. Before we left our place, though, I was able to snag a couple of nice closeups of some Spotted Doves; this one was my favorite of the bunch:

This was one of my "dear sweet merciful Zeus, why did I take so many pictures?" days. As a result, I've got a lot of photos to share, so I'll just get right to it.
First, a few shots from the place we were staying, starting with a tiki emerging from a tree trunk, crafted by noted Kauai carver Johnnie "Keoni" Durant.
